Fate: A Distopic Future?

The year is 2050;

Global warming has caused a melting of both polar ice caps, resulting in a drastic sea level rise and increased precipitation due to a hotter, wetter atmosphere. Resultantly, the Onondaga Valley has flooded, inundating the Syracuse Downtown, which was mostly composed of corporate offices and a large mall known as DestiNY USA. The residential areas, for the most part located on the surrounding hills survived, and the city dwellers have been dispersed by a city-funded mass suburbanization.

Robert Congel and Pyramid Companies, owners of the properties known as DestiNY USA, have a plan to save the downtown of Syracuse: they plan to use their flood insurance settlement, a sum of nearly $ 500 B. to rebuild.

After intensive market and consumer research they have gained over 50 years of operating DestiNY, they have developed the perfect model for a new city. Every conceivable service and good can be provided within one building, similar to DestiNY; however, their major improvement over that development is the ability to surround and compress your experience to the private realm of your car; which is equipped with all the niceties of contemporary life.

The building stands on an enormous plinth, constructed to resist the corrosive waters of the enlarged lake; and rises an amazing 300 car-stories; for a total height of 6000 feet; a marvel of engineered experience. The building even is able to harness the power of wind and sun with integrated turbines and PV; offsetting 2% of the necessary energy for the building. and reflecting its innovative nature, LEED has given the building a special award – Diamond Status – for its blend of technologies such as kayak racks and shower rooms for active commuters!

Access is assured through the surviving elevated interstate infrastructure – drive right up and into the reception areas located on the lower 30 floors of the building – a perfect system to divide up traffic by work type and schedule. After arrival, vehicles enter an auto-guide system which allows the user to concentrate on his/her work – for the 8 hour workday – in the peace and quiet not of a bustling office, but from the comforts of their own vehicle. The auto-guided; 8 hour cycle of the building allows for 3 independent sets of workers; distributed over the 24 hour day; 1st shift, 9-5, composed of wealthy business types, 2nd shift from 5-1 for creative night-owls, and 3rd, from 1-9 for service-industry workers. The perfect allocation of time and space allows for a unified social expirience!

At the end of your busy workday, you are all settled in your car for a relaxing, scenic drive back to your safe, quiet neighborhood on the outside of the flooded city. Pyramid Corps has created the total environment for a great, productive day in the city for all.

A day at Fate; the new project, will proceed something like this:

You arise in your Pyramid Corp. developed New Suburban tract home; properly furnished by Mrs. Stewart, Pottery Barn, and Crate + Barrel; push a button for your star bucks super macchiato late soy coffee machine dispenser and head to your Hummer H16 amphibious edition fortified urban mobility entertainment (H-FUMEV) while checking e-video mails on your iLife3. As the sugar kicks in, you begin your hour-long commute to the intersection of Interstate 81 and 690 – the location of Fate, to begin your cutting edge; innovative; mobile 8-hour workday – the perfect blend of production and consumption to match your desires.

The experience of Fate has been carefully choreographed to allow all the pleasures of your average workday; upon arrival, your super-sized McDonalds breakfast is delivered to your H-FUMEV and you park in the auto-guide track, to begin your daily work. The route programmed for you in the auto-guide track allows you to meet with colleagues, experience sweeping views of Lake Onondaga on the in-dash television screen, and work efficiently all within the confines of your personal vehicle.

Around Lunchtime, you have the option to navigate through a smorgasbord of international food selections, prepared from exotic locales with the most lavish ingredients – after all, you deserve it after a productive morning. The option to see friends also exists on the indoor H-FUMEV Polo court, where competition fuels great fun. After lunch-hour, you can return to the auto-office for some more mobile working; or if your heart desires, take a spin on the drive-thru, 15,000 yard golf course; where you rarely have to leave your vehicle in order to display your prowess and top notch products to your client friends.

As the workday winds to a close, remember to plan ahead and order from a broad menu of take-home dinner options, deliciously balanced to keep even the pickiest nutritionist happy; and a snack for the ride. You return home to your lovely family, luscious lawn and family dog, relaxed and happy after a day at the office complex Fate.
